Small Centers Committee

Introduction to the small college and university entrepreneurship center inclusion initiative

Smaller and emergent college and university entrepreneurship centers have significant representation in the membership of the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC). In order to ensure that the 2008 GCEC conference is a relevant and meaningful experience for the directors and participants of such centers a working committee  made up of GCEC members who self-identify in part as representatives of small centers has been formed. This committee has made important recommendations for how small center directors can engage the conference sessions in ways specific to the strengths, needs, challenges and distinct features of small center. Furthermore, the committee has worked to establish a post-conference social network that will allow small center representatives to continue discussions on and advancement of the issues that are raised throughout the 2008 conference.

Recommended characteristics of small college and university entrepreneurship centers

The effort to support small center members is open to all GCEC members. In order to help frame how small centers may be identified, the committee established the following three broad, fluid and by no means exhaustive characteristics of small centers:

  • Primary teaching mission institutions
  • Size of staffing
  • Student enrollment numbers

Those interested in participating in this effort and who would like to suggest further characteristics of small college and university entrepreneurship centers are encouraged to do by emailing recommendations to Matt Mars at mmars@eller.arizona.edu.

The current action items of the 2008 GCEC small center conference inclusion initiative are as follows

  • Identify key take-ways from the conference and how these points could be applied to small centers
  • Identify key take-ways from the conference that have potential value, but may represent very real challenges to small centers during the implementation process
  • Following the conference, the identified take-aways will be collected and posted on the Small Center social network site that will serve as a location of community discussions.  This site will be fluid and accessible to all GCEC members interested in posting ideas, challenges, recommendations, relevant events, appropriate literature and stories of success
  • The Small Center social network site will serve be used to encourage the development of initiatives and ongoing action.

Our real efforts will begin after the conference, in developing ways to apply and translate ideas and programs into feasible and achievable goals for small centers.  I appreciate your willingness to work on this project and add real value for all of the small centers, both currently existing and emerging in the future. The Moodle site will create a true archive that can both help continue the discussion and develop a resource that we can be posted on the website for GCEC wide use.

Technology Committee

Goal of the conference and commitee

The goal of the conference is straightforward: to advance the teaching, research and practice of entrepreneurship. The McGuire Center will plan, organize, and deliver the conference using state of the art technology. Technology will not only facilitate documentation and management of information for conference delivery but will also provide the capacity for participants to access and use it pre- and post-conference. This approach will allow participants to optimally explore areas of key interest. As such, the technology committee was formed to explore and recommend technology that us current, cutting edge and user-friendly.

The committee made recommendations on a variety of methods for capturing, documenting, and creating a means by which people can communucate regardless of time or location.

The Conference Tools page outlines the technology that we have been using for pre-conference planning as well as during and post conference inititatives. Check back to the Tools page as we expand out list often.
